There are lots of ingredients we all should avoid - like parabens and SLS. Those are the ingredients that are not only damaging to your skin, but to your health too. 

However, there are other ingredients that might be safe for our health, but damaging to our skin based on our skin type. Below are four ingredients that might be okay for other skin types, but are best to avoid for dry skin.

1. Surfactants

Surfactants are usually found in gel or foam cleansers as they help remove dirt, makeup, and debris from the skin. But they're often too harsh for dry skin, and instead of helping to cleanse your skin they can strip away your natural oils. Instead, opt for a cream or oil based cleanser. 

2. Salicylic Acid and Benzoyl Peroxide

These are two of the most well known (and frequently used) ingredients to treat acne prone skin.

While they are natural and safe for acne prone skin, if you have dry skin, it's best to avoid these ingredients as they're simply too harsh. I have acne prone, dry skin, and I've found that both of these leave my acne more inflamed and irritated, and they can even sting and burn my skin.

Instead I use the Cocokind Turmeric Spot Treatment - a treatment that's incredibly anti-inflammatory, soothing, and hydrating. It leaves my skin much more nourished and balanced so it's able to heal the acne safely and quickly. 

3. Retinoids

People with dry skin will know that they are more likely to show signs of aging (like wrinkles) earlier on than people with oilier skin types.

This is caused by the lack of hydration and moisture in our skin. It's not the biggest deal in the world, it just means we need to stay on top of moisturizing, and use moisturizing products across our skincare routines.

Now retinoids are meant to reduce signs of aging, but they can actually have the opposite effect.

They can make our skin more prone to sun damage, which is not only damaging to our physical health, but to the health and appearance of our skin. While I think they're okay to use in very small doses, like the kind found in Rosehip Oil, when you're looking for ways to reduce signs of aging, I think it's best to focus on moisturizing your skin and avoid retinoids. 

4. Green Clay

Of all the ingredients listed above, this is the most 'natural' - it's green clay, the foundation for a lot of DIY and store bought face masks and skincare treatments.

I even used green clay as a teen, and my skin loved it. But I've found that when you have dry skin, green clay is just too drying - it's a clarifying clay that's ideal for oily, acne prone skin, and when left on dry skin it just absorbs too much of our much needed natural oils. Instead, I highly recommend kaolin clay!
