Fall + Winter Herbs For Your DIY Face Steam Recipes


When you can use foods that are in season, you'll save money and reduce your impact on the environment, as the food likely didn't have to be shipped across the world to get to your table. The same goes for herbs. 

If you've got a garden, you might grow some of these already, making the environmental impact even less, but if not, rest assured that these skin saving herbs are in season for the next few months, so you can take advantage without harming the Earth. And if you're looking for a way to use these Fall and Winter herbs year round, you can purchase the essential oils. 

These herbs are great for adding to your face steams, baths, or even for your face masks and other skincare creations. While I've explained the benefits, it's important to note that the effectiveness of the herbs depends on how you use them. For example, soaking in them for an hour is going to give you more benefits than a ten minute face steam. Makes sense right? 

Green Tea

I like to use tea in all of my face steams as a base ingredient. Green tea is well known for it's skin care benefits, making it my usual go-to. While there's always more research to be done, this type of tea is high in antioxidants that can help repair cellular damage. So if you get a sunburn, or a cut, these antioxidants help repair the damage at a cellular level, leaving your skin soft, smooth, and glowing once again. 


This warming ingredient is ideal for the colder seasons. Pop a stick or two into your face steam to get all the benefits - the antioxidants, anti-inflammatory effects, and even the antimicrobial effects. Cinnamon will help repair your skin's cellular damage, reduce inflammation and irritation (like in acne prone and sensitive skin!) and the antimicrobial effects mean it can help keep acne at bay!


Lavender is one of my absolute essentials. I use it in teas, face steams, baths, and I diffuse the oil regularly. Physically, lavender helps reduce tension and anxiety, and it's a soothing herb that improves sleep. But applied topically, this herb (and it's oil) can be used to treat fungal infections, wounds, eczema, and acne. 


Mint is a refreshing, invigorating herb that's ideal for acne prone skin. It's astringent properties come from it's high amount of salicylic acid, a well known ingredient that reduces inflammation and heals acne. The acid gently exfoliates, preventing your skin from becoming clogged and congested. 


Rosemary is one of my favourite herbs, and it's got so many benefits for our skin. Just like green tea, this herb has lots of antioxidants to neutralize free radicals and repair cellular damage. You can get these benefits by adding it to your meals, but you can also mix it into your skincare. When applied topically (like in a face mask or steam!), this herb kills of unwanted bacteria and fungi, making it a soothing, gentle, plant based, and totally natural acne treatment. 


Thyme isn't a herb I use too often in skincare, but I should really start. Crunchy Betty, a blog on natural beauty (that I trust completely!) turned me onto this ingredient. Apparently, recent studies have shown that it's better at healing and improving acne that prescription treatments. While I'm not surprised, I'm thrilled we're starting to see studies that prove plants really are capable of healing.
