My Self Care Routine for Mental Health
Mental health isn't an easy topic to talk about. A lot of people shy away. It's a very personal topic, and there are so many dynamics and factors at play.
As someone who has struggled with anxiety, I've had bad days and good days. To help lessen the bad days, I've come to lean on self care as my primary coping strategy.
After a particularly bad night, I woke up wanting to blog about it. I want to share my self care practices with you in case you ever need them. Most of these are things I do the morning after I've had a bad day, when I still feel vulnerable and need some extra self care.
- A good breakfast // Cooking can be soothing, and a full plate will help to keep your energy levels up
- Lots of water // I always feel dehydrated when I wake up. I like to drink a lot right away, and sometimes with a lemon.
- Soothing music // Ben Howard or Dan Mangan. Both artists help to soothe my mood and facilitate relaxation.
- Talking or writing it out // Talk to a trusted friend or parent, or just write it all out in your notebook. Whatever works.
- Shower or extended beauty routine // Use your favourite scrub, mask, or body lotion. Or put on your favourite lipstick.
- A simple, minimal, comfortable outfit // This is what makes me feel happy and put together. I want to be comfortable and confident
- Some exercise or relaxation // Go for a walk, a bike ride, do some yoga poses, go to the gym. Whatever gets you moving, gets the blood flowing, and gets the endorphins pumping.
